Rugby union sevens fans in the United States who missed the home side’s strong performance at this past weekend’s USA Sevens in San Diego, California, have another chance to get a look … if they have access to the ESPN360 online network. The tournament which was won by Argentina after they bested the Americans in the Cup semifinal, is being replayed on ESPN360. The network’s availability in the United States varies across Internet providers, but is available on most university campus among other places. If you’ve got ESPN360, you can see pretty much the entire two-day tournament (more than eight hours of coverage per day), but the replay may not be available much longer as the network removes access to some video after 48 hours or so.

Those without access to ESPN360 can also see a one-hour special about the 2009 USA Sevens on the ABC network on Sunday, 22 February, at 5:00 p.m., but you’ll have to make do with this short highlight reel from the 2008 event for now:

The 2008-2009 IRB Sevens World Series is off to a flying start, with South Africa threatening to break New Zealand’s perennial dominance after winning the season’s first two tournaments in <a href="http://www.irb.com/irbsevens/edition=1/news/newsid=2027867.html#south+africa+gold+dubai"target="blank">Dubai and George.

Although the international sevens season has just begun and the next tournament in the series is not until February, the seven-a-side variant has been a hot topic all year because of high-profile attempts to get sevens into the Olympic Games. The effort has failed before, but some say the sport is a perfect fit. Earlier in the year, the International Rugby Board even went so far as to release a video lobbying for sevens’ inclusion. Have a look at the video, which primarily features spokespeople and clips from the more traditional version of rugby union, and see if you’re moved (or just to see the somewhat bizarre scene in the first twenty seconds wherein a woman briefly appears to be pregnant … with a rugby football?):

Given Armchair Playmaker’s dual-code focus, we talk a lot about code-swapping. Usually, this means players moving back and forth between the fifteen-man rugby union code and the thirteen-man rugby league code, but recent news about Waisale Serevi is another matter. The Fijian legend, who played extensively for the Fiji rugby union side but is more famous for his performances with the successful Fijian rugby union sevens side, is set to play in a rugby league nines tournament in the United Kingdom next Wednesday. The crowd is in for a treat if he is as dazzling playing rugby league nines (a rugby league variant with nine players per side and 7.5-minute halves) as he was in rugby union sevens (a rugby union variant with seven players per side and seven-minute halves), as seen below:
